Black & Blue

Black & Blue

"Black and Blue is a marvelous and accessible theatrical treasure.  It will steal your heart and captivate your mind… I can think of no other way to describe this production than as a little masterpiece." - Peter Tromp, Cape Times 2005

 Surviving a personal tragedy

A woman and her house turn blue,

A visitor enters bringing yellow.

Starring Sylvaine Strike (The Travellers, Coupé, The Table, The Miser) and Atandwa Kani (Hayani, The Island, The Miser)

Directed by James Cuningham and Helen Iskander

Set in suburbia, this piece gently observes the complexities of this country's ongoing master and servant relationships.

Performed in a detailed, heightened style, every second of Mrs. Swart’s existence is alarmingly magnified. Paranoid of life beyond the four walls of her blue house, and stifling in the blue fog of her grief, she eventually succumbs to the persuasive knocking at her door. The angelic arrival of Jackson Siboiboi who seeks to work as a gardener in her abandoned garden initiates a relationship that blossoms through fragility and a change of heart.

Critically acclaimed at the National Arts Festival 2004 where Black and Blue received pick of the Fringe and played to packed out houses, 2014 marks the 10th year anniversary of Black & Blue. Perhaps the play most recognizable as the work that truly launched Sylvaine Strike’s theatrical signature, and won her the Naledi best Actress in a Comedy 2004, and Fleur du Cap nomination in the same category.

Devised in collaboration with James Cuningham and Helen Iskander (whom Sylvaine directed and collaborated with in Baobabs don’t Grow Here) Black and Blue comes full circle to the festival a decade later, a nostalgic return for old patrons and an electrifying theatrical revelation for a new generation.

Sylvaine dedicates Black and Blue to Mandie van der Spuy in recognition of her formidable patronage of the Young Artists for the past 30 Years.
